The privilege of partnership
God gives us all the great privilege of partnering with Him in what he wants to do in the world. Those in Exilio are committed to following his lead and reaching out to others who feel estranged from God and marginalised from hope and joy. We want to unleash resources so that we can act with deep compassion towards those who feel lost, lonely or hurting in our broken world.
In Exilio we try to remember four things about our money and possessions:
- we are the stewards and not the owners of all that we have
- we have been bought with a price and we are not our own
- we live in a world that idolises and deifies money and possessions but Jesus expects us to be different
- we follow Jesus who gave his all to save us
At the heart of Exilio is a bunch of people who believe those four things about our ‘stuff’ and are committed to taking steps to live differently with Jesus as our guide. We think we have good reason to believe that he offers us a better way of living and we are keen to explore this further. However this way of life doesn’t come easily to any of us and we screw up all the time. It involves rearranging our priorities and investing our time, talents and treasure to extend Jesus Kingdom. However we are making progress and are discovering that it is a great way to live. We commend it to you.
“But just as you excel in everything –- in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving” 2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV)
Here are some resources that might help you take the next step.
Budget Why not start by working out how much income you have in a year and how much you spend. From that you can begin to put together a budget.
Begin somewhere It is very hard to begin anything new. It feels awkward strange. But did youknow that God is so convinced of the benefits that come from giving that he challenges people to test him. This is NOT to say that God will bless you financially - but if you obey him - he promises to bring his blessing into your life
Develop good habits
Giving regularly in a planned way is a great discipline to have. It doesn't stop spontaneous gifts - but it does mean that we can begin to honour God by giving him the first bit of all we earn.
Get things in proportion
The Bible encourages us to give generously and in proportion to our income. This is a real challenge as it seems folr most of us that the more we have the more we want to keep
Don't let the tax man get away with it! Exilio is a registered charity, If you are UK tax payer, you can 'Gift Aid' your donations and the church can reclaim tax. It is easy.
